The role of antibiotic prophylaxis in mesh repair of primary inguinal hernias using prolene hernia system: a randomized prospective double-blind control trial

Abstract: Antibiotic prophylaxis is being commonly used in mesh repair of inguinal hernia but its role has been questioned in a recent Cochrane analysis performed in 2003. Routine use of antibiotic prophylaxis in mesh repair of inguinal hernia can lead to bacterial resistance and increase in cost. In a present double-blind placebo controlled trial involving 120 patients undergoing inguinal hernia repair using prolene hernia system, we did not find any benefit of the routine use of antibiotic prophylaxis in terms of woun… Show more

“…They concluded that antibiotic prophylaxis has no benefit in the incidence of SSI in elective repair of inguinal hernias with mesh. 18 Similar results were documented by Jain et al, 19 Tzovaras et al, 20 and Aufenacker et al, 21 which did not support the use of prophylactic antibiotics in low-risk patients with inguinal mesh hernioplasty.…”

“…[8], [19], [20] Recent studies in Indian setting have consistently showed similar incidences of infection in the antibiotics prophylaxis group and control group. [21], [22], [23] However, in one of the studies the incidence of infection in the control group was quiet high.(10.5%). [21] In the recent Cochrane review, which evaluated patients of hernioplasty subgroup, showed that the antibiotic prophylaxis show a significant reduction of wound infection rates.…”
