The Role of Acupuncture in Postoperative Pain Management of Patients Undergoing Knee Arthroplasty Surgery

Abstract: Acupuncture after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may decrease the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV).Acupuncture did not decrease visual analog scale (VAS) scores in the 0 to 48-hour interval but did decrease VAS scores at >48 hours after TKA.The heterogeneity of the studies prevented meta-analysis of opioid use with acupuncture after TKA; a systematic review demonstrated mixed results.Additional studies are needed to investigate opioid reduction with acupuncture after TKA.

“…Systematic reviews and meta-analysis, however, favor some analgesic effect of acupuncture, with benefits also in controlling postoperative nausea and vomiting and possible reduction in opioid consumption. 40 Evidence supports the use of massage therapy; meditative movement therapies, such as yoga and tai chi; dietary interventions; and other mind-body techniques for the treatment of acute pain, including postoperative pain, 1 although the evidence is typically not specific to knee surgery or even orthopaedic surgery in general.…”

“…Acupuncture has been used as an adjunctive therapy in perioperative settings. [4][5][6][7][8][9] Main effects include facilitating analgesia, reducing anesthesia-related complications and organ protection. [6][7][8][9] Acupressure on specific acupoints like Shenmen (HT7) and Ximen (PC4) can significantly reduce stress levels and induces significant relaxation and drowsiness.…”

[10,11] However, whether acupoint stimulation at these specific acupoints could induce sedative effects and reduce propofol consumption in patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery remains unclear.…”
