We investigated the pattern of distribution of intertidal soft-bottom fauna in streams and lagoons of the Uruguayan coast at three spatial scales. The Rı´o de la Plata and the Atlantic Ocean produce on this coast a large-scale gradient in salinity, defining a freshwater (west), an estuarine (central) and a marine (east) region. Within each region, there are several streams and coastal lagoons (sites) that define a second scale of variability. A third scale is given by intertidal gradients within each site. Species richness and total abundance was low in the freshwater west region and high in the central and east regions. The community in the west region was characterized by the clam Curbicula fluminea; in the other regions, it was dominated mainly by the polychaete Heteromastus similis. The polychaete Nephtys fluviatilis was more abundant in the east region, while another polychaete, Laeonereis acuta, characterized the central region. Sediment fractions did not vary significantly at this scale. At the scale of the sites, species richness and total macrofaunal abundance were higher in coastal lagoons than in streams. Coarse sands were more common in coastal lagoons, while medium and fine sand characterized the sediment in streams. Within each site, species richness and total abundance increased towards the lower intertidal level; the macrofauna of the upper levels were a subsample of the fauna occurring at the lower levels. There was also a significantly lower proportion of fine sand at the upper level. At regional scales, the observed patterns may be indirectly or directly related to the gradient in salinity, through differential physiological tolerance to osmotic stress. At the scale of the sites, variability may be explained mainly by geomorphological and sedimentological differences between lagoons and streams. Variation among levels may be related to gradients in desiccation, colonization and predation.

The age-class distribution of the whitemouth croaker Micropogonias furnieri and its relationship to environmental factors was evaluated from 278 stations sampled between 1993 and 1999 during early winter and spring within the Rio de la Plata estuary (36°S, 56°W). A detrended canonical correspondence analysis (DCCA) was used to define sampling station groups based on age structure of whitemouth croaker, and to estimate their association with depth, type of substrate, temperature and salinity of surface and bottom waters. Complementary information for surface temperature and location of the turbidity fronts was derived from NOAA-14-AVHRR imagery obtained in 1999. Results indicated that bottom salinity has a major influence on the spatial distribution pattern of M. furnieri, and that distinct preferences for different salinities by the various age-classes of this species result in a differential distribution pattern along the main axis of the estuary. In both seasons, turbidity fronts were located at the inner central area of the estuary and showed a close fit with the distribution of the youngest age-classes. ABSTRACT1. South American fur seals (Arctophoca australis) inhabiting the Río de la Plata plume and adjoining areas are known to forage upon a wide range of prey (i.e. pelagic, demersal and benthic species).2. Since the 1960s, trawlers have operated in the area, targeting primarily demersal and benthic species. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios from 54 adult male fur seals dead stranded along the coast of southern Brazil from 1994 to 2011 were analysed to investigate whether the intensification of fishing in Río de la Plata and adjoining areas since the mid-1990s has reduced the availability of benthic and demersal prey to the growing population of South American fur seals.3. No significant correlation between δ 13 C or δ 15 N values and stranding year was found, thus revealing that fur seals maintained a steady diet over 17 years. 4. Reconstruction of the isotopic landscape of the study area using potential prey of fur seals showed a spatial segregation, with prey from southern Brazil typically enriched in 13 C and depleted in 15 N compared with those from northern Argentina. Most adult male fur seals relied mainly on small pelagic fishes and squid captured on the continental shelf, whereas medium pelagic and demersal-benthic prey played a minor role in the diet. 5. It is concluded that South American fur seals rely on pelagic resources (i.e. small pelagic fish and squid) more strongly than previously thought and that their diet does not reflect the varying abundance of demersal-benthic resources in the area.
