The Riding Trail as Geotourism Attraction: Evidence from Iceland

Abstract: The geological aspects of tourism are much more extensive than just places to be viewed and/or experienced. The terrain traveled is also a geological phenomenon and an attraction in itself. For a hiker or a rider the type of trail is important. Features of the trail such as the gradient, altitude, the soil qualities, the length and the vistas it affords are important geological considerations. The trail as an experienced geological attraction, or should we say, the foundation for horse based tourism, particula… Show more

“…Designing a nature trail through the landscape for geotourism is a proposal for a new tourist product alternative to the traditional coastal tourist product "sun and beach" (Beltrán-Yanes et al, 2020). The paths have scientific/educational, cultural/heritage, landscape, and tourist, just like other geosites (Helgadóttir & Sigurðardóttir, 2018). Other elements that form the basis for the development of geotourism are geoparks (Skibinski et al, 2021).…”

“…Integration between aspects of geodiversity, biodiversity, and cultural diversity has the potential to support the development of geoparks as pioneers and innovative strategies for nature conservation, land use planning, and sustainable regional development [25]. The geographical approach is needed in planning Geotourism Destination Planning: Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu UNESCO Global Geopark (Wulung, et al) more comprehensive geotourism destinations between geological (abiotic), flora and fauna (biotic) elements, and the presence of local communities (cultural) [6].…”

“…Helgadóttir & Sigurðardóttir's [13] paper focuses on the trail as an experienced geological attraction for horse-based tourism, and particularly long rides. They argue that the trail is a geotouristic phenomenon, since riders choose particular trails based on their geological and geomorphological qualities such as soil and landforms.…”
