The Revised-Panic Screening Score for emergency department patients with noncardiac chest pain.

Abstract: The Revised-PSS has significant potential for improving identification of panic-like anxiety in emergency department patients with low risk noncardiac chest pain and promoting early access to treatment. External validation and impact analysis of the Revised-PSS are warranted prior to clinical implementation. (PsycINFO Database Record

“…Some brief self-report instruments have been shown to be useful in screening for PD in patients with NCCP, such as the Revised Panic Screening Score (58,59) and the Psychiatric Diagnostic Screening Questionnaire (60,61). A similarly brief instrument, such as the GAD-2, could be used to screen for GAD during a patient's initial visit for NCCP (62).…”

“…One first step would be to improve upon the 8 percent PA identification rate following the clinical assessment by the emergency physician (Foldes-Busque et al, 2011). Implementation of brief screening instrument developed for this purpose such as the Revised Panic Screening Score is a potential solution to this problem (Foldes-Busque et al, 2018). Once the presence of PAs has been confirmed by a mental health professional, Anxiety Sensitivity Amelioration Training (Schmidt et al, 2007), a brief intervention specifically targeting anxiety sensitivity, whose efficacy has been demonstrated in university students with no current or recent psychiatric condition, could be offered to patients for which the presence of PAs has been confirmed (Keough and Schmidt, 2012; Schmidt et al, 2017).…”

“…Patients with NCCP are particularly susceptible to experiencing panic attacks (PAs) and developing panic disorder (PD), a severe psychiatric condition characterized by recurrent PAs. This susceptibility is evidenced by prevalence Incidence of panic disorder in patients with non-cardiac chest pain and panic attacks rates of current PAs (34.5%-44.0%) and PD (13.0%-37.7%) that are, respectively, 3-to 4-fold and 4-to 14-fold higher in patients with NCCP than in the general population (Dammen et al, 2004;Fleet et al, 1996;Foldes-Busque et al, 2018, 2019Kessler et al, 2006).…”

“…With written consent from patients or next of kin (if deceased), records for admissions or consultations outside of the study hospital will be obtained from the hospital archives. Medical data will be extracted using a combination of a standardized medical data extraction form known for its excellent reliability (Cohen's k = 0.72-0.91) and modules from the GRACE initial form [79][80][81].…”
