The catalytic activation of thermochemical fluids or binary mixtures (BMs) based on ammonium nitrate and sodium nitrite was experimentally and numerically investigated as well as kinetically modeled. Experimental evidence in an autoclave reactor indicated an increase of temperature up to 242.5 °C and pressure up to 47.7 bar after the catalytic activation under standard conditions is accomplished. By means of the T and P growth and the observed reaction products (N2, NO2, and H2O), the reaction kinetic constants along with its stoichiometry were established and later on validated with a numerical reactor model. Subsequently, field-scale numerical models evaluated the activation of the BM within different reservoir rock quality (porosity: 3–15% and permeability: 4.4–111 mD), fluid type (light and heavy oils), injection rate (1–3 m3), and initial reservoir pressure (85 and 150 bar). Poor reservoir quality and injection rate were observed as the dominant requirements to ensure a more aggressive reservoir fracking. They illustrated an exponential response on the peak pressure, particularly at porosity and permeability values <5% and <17 mD, respectively. The exhibited peak pressures in our models range from 108–389 to 144–392 bar, for the light and heavy oils, respectively. We found that these in situ pressures are substantially in excess in reference to the predicted fracking pressure of the studied reservoirs. This implies that the activation of the BM within the porous media is a promising reservoir fracking method. Moreover, its robust exothermicity surpasses the reported glass transition and melting temperature of certain asphaltenes. Our findings can provide meaningful understanding about the geologyinjection requirements that can lead to fracking a given reservoir as well as its thermal development potential for well cleaning purposes when implementing BM for IOR applications.

During the oil well usage its flow rate inevitably lessens. As a result the oil production enterprises must solve the most important problem of the oil extraction intensification. When solving filtration problems (there is a great set of problems; here we will deal with one of them including physical processes, difficulties and problem setting-up) ordinarily use well-known problems. However, in many cases, for example, when describing thermogas-chemica modification (TGCM) there capacity is insufficient. For example, one needs describing of more than two phases, taking into account chemical reactions and so on. We produced a program which clears this trouble. This program can model main features of the TGCM case: many-phase and non-isothermal process, non-one-dimensional flow. As a result we can better tune calculation programs for specific deposits by taking into consideration of geologic peculiarities and near-well zone defects occurred as a result of previous usage.

This work is devoted to investigate the ability of thermal shocking to create fractures in rock samples and thermal cracking of heavy crude oil structure. In order to study the thermobaric characterizations of catalytic and thermal decomposition reaction of binary mixture (BM), a series of experiments was designed in high-temperature and high-pressure reactor (HTHP) and the time to reach the maximum temperature and pressure were monitored. Before and after the experiments, core samples were scanned by 4D tomography. In addition, SARA analysis was done to study the effect of thermal shocking on heavy oil composition. The results showed that using BiMTheCh, the temperature in the reaction zone was increased up to 273 °C during very short time (2 seconds) after activation of the reaction. Either, the pressure was increased up to 129 atm. As results showed, the simultaneous sudden increase in temperature and pressure creates a thermal shock which reduces breakdown pressure from 235 to 12 atm. Computed scanning tomography results confirmed formation of new fractures on the surface of core samples. Results of the SARA analysis also confirmed that the molecular structure of heavy oil due to the binary mixture's reaction was changed. Sharp increase in pressure and temperature induced transformation of heavy components of crude oil such as asphaltenes into lighter components such as saturates. Generally, the binary mixture technology can be used as a new high-efficient and eco-friendly technology for enhanced heavy oil recovery from tight heavy oil reservoirs.
