The results of external quality assessment programme on urine leukocyte and erythrocyte counting in Poland

Abstract: Introduction: Urine particle analysis is an important diagnostic tool. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of urine leukocyte (WBC) and erythrocyte (RBC) counting results obtained with manual and automated methods in Polish laboratories participating in the international external quality assessment (EQA) programme. Materials and methods: 1400 WBC and RBC counting results were obtained from 183 laboratories in EQA surveys organised by Labquality (Helsinki, Finland) from 2017 to 2019. The betwee… Show more

“…There were 35% of automated measurements, with 30% performed by image-based technology and 5% by fluorescent flow cytometry. The Polish guidelines recommend that at least WBC and RBC results should be expressed as the number of particles × 10 6 /L, but the manual method still holds qualitative description for bacteria in manual examinations, including five categories ( Ćwiklińska et al., 2020 ). When the quantification values for bacteria are commonly attributed to microbiology investigations, the expressed bacterial count as the number of particles × 10 6 /L can be confusing.…”

“…Improper storage, the duration and force of centrifugation, or the method of pellet resuspension can all affect the accuracy of the results during urine microscopy. [80][81][82] Classically, microscopy is carried out when a dipstick test urinalysis flags abnormal results. Many automated microscopic urine analyzers now remove the manual preparation steps and integrate test strip readings with automated cell counts.…”

“…In addition to conventional Internal Quality Control (IQC) programs, External Quality Assessment Schemes (EQAS) represent a key tool for the improvement of laboratory quality and are mandatory requirements in accreditation programs in all fields of laboratory medicine [3]. EQAS on urinary sediment are rare [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12].…”
