“…In this study, low concentrations of Zn fertilizer (Z1 and Z2) markedly promoted height, diameter at stem base and leaf area of pecan seedlings, which is in agreement with findings of previous studies (Liu et al 2019(Liu et al , 2020. High concentrations of Zn fertilizer (Z3 and Z4) restricted the growth of seedlings and the inhibitory effect strengthened with the increase in Zn concentration.…”

“…To a certain degree, Zn absorption depends on the size of the available Zn pool in the soil (Liu et al 2019); therefore, Zn fertilization is an effective strategy to increase Zn concentrations in the soil. However, Zn toxicity is harmful to plants and can occur when the Zn content in plant tissues exceeds the content required or when the soil contains excess Zn, which is detrimental to soil quality (Nair & Chung 2017;Garcia-Gomez et al 2018;Liu et al 2020) and can even cause environmental pollution (Zhou et al 2020). Consequently, although it is necessary to increase the output of crops or trees via fertilization, precise management of nutrients is vital for sustainable production in agriculture and forestry, especially with respect to the maintenance of microelements, which help promote fruit set, yield and quality.…”

“…The changes in the SMBC are the result of microbial growth and decomposition of OM (Liu et al, 2020). The results of the present study showed that the high biochar application (60 t ha −1 ) with both low and high N increased the SMBC, indicating that the addition of biochar promoted microbial growth.…”

“…Investigating the amendment of soils with Zn salts has been undertaken in the context of Zn acting as a soil fertiliser. One 9 year field study applied a range of Zn concentrations to soils and found slight differences in the bacterial (but not fungal) community composition compared to the no Zn control (Liu, Cao et al, 2020). No differences in microbial community (alpha) diversity were observed.…”
