“…In particular, the polymorphonuclear character of the cellular exudate was similar to that reported for mycobacterial infections in nude mice (16,17). This suggested that the deficiency in cell-mediated immune function in these animals may be at least partly compensated for by an enhanced nonspecific cellular response.…”

“…Susceptibilities to such micro-organisms have been thought to increase in hosts with depressed functions of T lymphocytes. Increased susceptibilities of nude mice to experimental infections with L. monocytogenes (Emmerling, Finger & Bockemiihl, 1g75), M. bovis (BCG) (Sher et al, 1975;Takeya et al, Ig77), Babesia microti and Plasmodium berghei yoelii (Clark & Allison, 1974) have been reported. According to Emmerling et al (1g75), viable organisms of L. monocytogenes were eliminated from the spleen of normal littermates in the typical course of an experimental infection, but were retained persistently in nude mice from an initial stage to a late stage of infection.…”

“…obtained from the Trudeau Mycobacterial Culture Bank appeared to be comparable to the French strain in virulence, since it grew in nude mice but not in normal littermates (Sher et al, 1975 Hashimoto, 1970; Sher et al, 1973). Our work suggests that athymic nude mice may be more suitable for investigating the differences in virulence between attenuated strains of BCG.…”
