The reproduction of Ochtodes secundiramea (montagne) howe (Gigartinales, Rhizophyllidaceae)

Abstract: This paper gives informations on the type of carpogonial branches found in a representative of the family Rhizophyllidaceae, as well as details of the auxiliary cell branches in the genus Ochtodes. Details of the development of the spermatangia in this genus are also presented. The tetrasporic plants, not yet known in this genus are described for the first time. The tetrasporangia are produced in nemathecia and have no sterile filaments in between, and in this respect are similar to the ones found in Rhizophyl… Show more

“…Agardh (1872), a genus belonging to the Rhizophyllidaceae, order Gigartinales (Schneider & Wynne 2007), currently comprises two species. The generitype, O. secundiramea (Montagne) M. Howe, has been long known from Caribbean México, Cuba, Barbados, Bahamas, the Lesser Antilles, including Guadeloupe and Martinique, and Brazil (Joly & Ugadim 1966, Mateo‐Cid & Mendoza‐González 1986, Littler & Littler 2000; Wynne 2005, Guiry & Guiry 2010), whereas the second species, O. crockeri Setchell et Gardner, is known only from the Galapagos Islands (Setchell & Gardner 1937).…”

“…This genus is well defined and includes thalli that are irregularly branched with cylindrical axes derived from two prominent apical cells. A transverse section of the thallus reveals a central medulla formed by two large axial filaments, an outer medullary region formed by large colorless cells, septate rhizoidal filaments and a cortex of smaller cells (Joly & Ugadim 1966). Distinct gland cells are present in the cortical layer.…”
