“…Emerging research also suggests responses to COVID-19 may result in numerous negative impacts to conservation. For example, the prioritization of economic recovery may come at the expense of conservation funding, travel restrictions may limit nature based tourism, and economic struggles may result in increased illegal take of wildlife for subsistence purposes or as an alternative source of income ( Gibbons et al, 2021 , McCleery et al, 2020 , Sandbrook et al, 2020 ). It is therefore possible that conservation may be sinking in a storm of other more salient issues, or it could be emerging as relatively more important as the public recognizes key links between humans, wildlife, and nature.…”

“…Some of the tourism sectors and subsectors that were adversely affected by COVID-19 includes the sports tourism industry ( Drewes et al, 2021 ; Alam and Abdurraheem, 2021 ); restaurant industry ( Dube et al, 2021a , Dube et al, 2021b , Dube et al, 2021c ; Kim et al, 2021 ; Song et al, 2021 ); aviation industry ( Liu et al, 2021 ; Deveci et al, 2022 ), car rental and airports industry to mention but a few ( Wang et al, 2022 ; Zhang et al, 2022 ). The scourge of the COVID-19 pandemic did not spare tourists destinations that are highly dependent on tourism revenue for conservation either, as they were left battling to look for conservation financing elsewhere ( Hambira et al, 2021 ; Bates et al, 2021 ; Gibbons et al, 2021 ).…”
