The relative cost of biomass energy transport

Abstract: Logistics cost, the cost of moving feedstock or products, is a key component of the overall cost of recovering energy from biomass. In this study, we calculate for small- and large-project sizes, the relative cost of transportation by truck, rail, ship, and pipeline for three biomass feedstocks, by truck and pipeline for ethanol, and by transmission line for electrical power. Distance fixed costs (loading and unloading) and distance variable costs (transport, including power losses during transmission), are ca… Show more

“…Blending high-quality biomass has to be implemented to the extent that the overall yields of intermediates and products reach desirable levels. From a logistics point of view, a bio-refinery in Lee County will need up to 540 dry tons of CS per day, which can be provided by nearby counties in the state of Georgia (Searcy et al, 2007). If blending high-quality biomass can help improve overall conversion yields, farmers and local government will be incentivized to grow corn crops in Lee country itself.…”

“…The impact of time dependent costs on the total costs decreases with increasing transportation distance [55]. Some authors consider that transport costs for longer distances could be kept low if the transport mode is changed, from road to rail and waterway.…”
