The Relationship of Mean Defect to Corrected Loss Variance in Glaucoma and Ocular Hypertension

Abstract: Statistical analysis of visual-field data is permitted by the quantitative techniques used in automated perimetry. The visual-field indices mean defect (MD) and corrected loss variance (CLV) provide an opportunity to analyze and follow visual fields mathematically. We investigated the relationship of MD to CLV in 32 glaucoma suspects and 17 patients with visual-field defects due to chronic open-angle glaucoma. In glaucoma patients with early and moderate disease (up to a MD of 18 dB), the CLV statistically cov… Show more

“…In early and moderate glaucomas, there is a linear relationship between the sLV and the MD (28). These results confirm previous reports that sLV and MD are better correlated in TOP than in FT (8).…”

“…2 15 LF progressively increased from stage 0 to stage 4, reached a plateau for MD of about −13 dB and then decreased when the glaucoma defect became more diffuse (stage 5 had CI similar to stage 1). This curve resembles the curvilinear relation between MD and PSD described by Pearson et al ,16 because they share at least two common determining factors.…”

“…This may be linked to these two factors or to the better correlation between MD and sLV with the TOP strategy than with SB. The relation between both indices has been described (21), indicating that the increase of fluctuation and the irregularity of the visual field are direct-ly linked to the progression of most of the abnormalities.…”
