The aims of our study were to: (1) explore the relationship between differentiation of self and separation anxiety; and (2) examine the congruency between spouses in terms of these variables. The research is the first to study differentiation of self and separation anxiety among adults in general, and among married couples in particular. On the whole, results indicated that spouses had similar levels of differentiation on two scales: emotional cutoff and I-position, while women reported higher levels of emotional reactivity and fusion with others. A significant relationship was found among men between fusion with others and separation anxiety: a high level of fusion was found to correlate with a high level of anxiety. Among women, a high level of emotional reactivity was related to a high level of separation anxiety. These findings shed further light on Bowen's family system theory, as they indicate correlations between several measures of differentiation and separation anxiety.

ResumoOs sintomas psicofuncionais manifestados pelo bebê se refl etem no comportamento disfuncional da criança e se manifestam nas áreas relacionadas ao sono, alimentação, digestão, respiração, pele e comportamento. A literatura aponta para a existência de uma relação entre a presença de tais sintomas no bebê e a dinâmica da relação deste com a mãe. A partir de uma perspectiva psicanalítica, a presente pesquisa, de caráter exploratório e abordagem qualitativa, utilizou o delineamento de estudo de caso único para investigar a relação mãe-bebês, em situação de gemelaridade, cujos bebês apresentam indicadores de sintomas psicofuncionais aos nove meses de idade. Participaram deste estudo uma tríade formada pela mãe e seus bebês gêmeos com idade de nove meses. Os instrumentos utilizados foram o Symptom Check-List, uma fi cha de dados sócio-demográfi cos, entrevista semi-estruturada com a mãe e sessão de observação da interação livre da mãe com os bebês. Os resultados apontam que a gemelaridade pode confi gurar-se como um dos fatores que pode aumentar as chances do surgimento dos sintomas psicofuncionais em fase precoce do desenvolvimento. Além disso, a confl itiva conjugal aliada à falta de apoio paterno, em especial em situação de gemelaridade, pode potencializar as chances de surgimento de falha materna e consequente risco ao desenvolvimento de sintomas psicofuncionais nos bebês. Desta forma, ampliar a compreensão acerca do funcionamento de uma tríade pode contribuir como medida preventiva e fornecer subsídios para profi ssionais de diversas áreas de atuação que trabalham com bebês e suas mães como escolas, hospitais, clínicas e psicoterapeutas da relação pais-bebê. Understanding the type of family structure and dynamics of family whose head of the family is a stripper is essential in uncovering the unknown dimension of a unique family. The study wishes to explore the live experiences of spouses of male strippers. It is made to believed that a society is built on a strong family which is the basic unit and a strong committed family commitment would possibly improve quality of life of the society. The study used Qualitative Phenomological Design. Six participants are included in the study with the following inclusion criteria; live in or married for at least six months while husband is still dancing at bars. Structured interview was utilized in the study. Van Khaam method was used in data management. The findings revealed five major themes namely engaging, loving with two sub themes, loving because and loving inspite, struggling with three sub themes: internal struggle and external struggle and economic burden, accepting with two sub themes; resignation and acceptance because of same work and lastly transforming husband. The experience of spouses of male strippers is an evolving journey. The transformation of the spouses and the events attached to the experience has developed the individual into a strong individual. The study recommends that nurses make a planned counseling program for this risk groups to decrease anxiety and stress of spouses of male strippers and make a quality of life research using the same population to better understand the phenomenon.
