The relationship between structure and function as measured by OCT and Octopus perimetry

Abstract: Background/aims To determine the structurefunction relationship between equivalent visual field areas obtained with the Octopus perimeter (OP), and the peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness measured with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) in healthy individuals and patients with glaucomatous optic neuropathy. Methods Eighty-eight normal subjects and 150 patients with open-angle glaucoma were prospectively recruited. Eligible participants for the glaucoma group were required t… Show more

“…This makes it easier to group functionally related test points into clusters and to couple these visual field clusters to defined areas of the ONH [ 12 , 17 ]. In a recent study, Monsalve et al [ 18 ] presented a structure-function map using OCT sectors and Octopus VF regions obtained completely from objective analysis of healthy participants and patients with glaucoma. This map shows reasonable agreement with that of Garway-Heath et al [ 15 , 18 ].…”

“…In contrast, the fast and easily performed TOP strategy has been widely used 2–6 13–15 22. However, due to its special algorithm, the threshold sensitivity values (and the parameters calculated from them) are influenced by the responses given at the neighbouring points, which modifies the final results 1 2 16.…”

“…Uncomplicated ocular hypertension was defined as ocular hypertension without any criteria for glaucoma suspect or glaucoma. Glaucoma was defined as the association of a glaucomatous papilla (see criteria in Table 1) and a confirmed visual field defect on 2 successive tests, regardless of the IOP [8,11,12]. Other criteria for diagnosis of glaucoma according to the International Society for Geographical and Epidemiological Ophthalmology (ISGEO) classification were used for a sensitivity analysis ( Table 1) [13].…”
