The relationship between serum visfatin, adiponectin, and insulin sensitivity markers in neonates after birth

Abstract: We found significantly higher insulin and visfatin levels in LGA neonates and lower adiponectin levels in SGA neonates. We concluded that the relationship between adiponectin and visfatin and insulin sensitivity (metabolic disturbances) is very complex with little evidence of correlation in SGA and LGA neonates.

“…Visfatin is produced mainly in the adipose tissue, and its concentration is related to the total body fat mass. 17,18 Although it is possible that visfatin is a marker of fat accumulation, no study to date has reported any association between visfatin levels and the established endocrine regulators of fetal growth, IGF-I, and insulin. 19 Consistent with this, we found no correlation between visfatin levels and those of other adipocytokines including IGF-I.…”

“…An NOS score of 5 or 6 stars in all of the studies suggested the inclusion of good quality studies [8-17]. With the exception of one study conducted by Kyriakakou et al[11], which used RIA kits, maternal blood or cord adiponectin concentrations were measured using ELISA kits in all studies [8-10, 12-17]. …”

“…45 Precisely, hypoadiponectinemia has been shown to be associated with insulin resistance, 46 leptin may influence the "programming" of satiety, 47,48 and visfatin can increase in parallel with hyperglycemia for insulin-like effect. 49 In fact, several studies demonstrated that higher maternal plasma visfatin concentration is associated with insulin resistance, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), patients with small-for-gestational-age (SGA), 50,51 and neonates with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). 52…”
