The Relationship Between Serum Lipid Fractions and Heart Rate Variability in Diabetic Patients With Statin Therapy

Abstract: Background and aimsThe aim of this study is to identify and highlight the relationship between serum lipid fractions and heart rate variability in diabetic patients receiving statin therapy.Patients and methodsThe study was performed in a group of 87 type 2 diabetic patients on statin associated therapy. All patients were on Holter ECG 24 hours monitored with three channel monitor (Labtech ECG Holter monitor), and data were analyzed on a commercially available software (Cardiospy PC SW/EV 5.02.06.02). “…To our knowledge, there is no data on hypercholesterolemia and HRV in the literature. Interestingly, some studies showed that a decrease in LDL by statin therapy could improve HRV parameters [ 83 , 84 ]. We demonstrated that an increase in systolic blood pressure was linked with shorter RR intervals and a decrease in HF.…”

“…Parameters like SDNN and rMSSD are reduced when glucose and insulin are elevated ( 99 ). Regarding lipid metabolism, change of diet has been associated with HRV changes ( 100 ), but reports are conflicting regarding possible correlations between lipid concentrations in blood and HRV ( 101 , 102 ).…”

“…Total Cholesterol levels were close to the limits speci ed by guidelines for diabetic patients and for patients with cardiovascular diseases, with no signi cant di erences between males and females. 25 Mean values of HDL-C were decreased. HDL-C levels were found to be higher in females (37.22 ± 10.75) com¬pared with males (35.36 ± 7.70), with statistical signi ¬cance (p=0.00081).26 Few studies have shown that postmenopausal women present with a signi cant increase of TC, LDL-C and TG values, but insigni cant decrease of HDL-C.27-28 On the other hand, a comparative study of plasma lipid pro le tests in healthy young population showed that TC and LDL-C levels were signi cantly increased in men.…”
