Objective: To highlight the importance of the interrelation between the ABO blood group system and platelet indices in healthy young adults. Study Design: Cross-sectional study Place and Duration of Study: Pathology Department, PNS Shifa Hospital, Karachi Pakistan, from Jan to Jun 2020. Methodology: Comprised 399 blood donors who visited the transfusion department of the hospital without any comorbidities.All the donors were requested for their informed consent before their enrolment in the study. Blood groups were determined by a simple conventional tile method. Platelet indices (Platelet count, mean platelet volume and Platelet distribution width)were studied by auto-analyzer. Blood pressures were estimated by manual auscultator technique with a mercury sphygmomanometer. Results: Males and females were equal in number, with a mean BMI of 19.89(1.24%). The majority of the donors, 143(35.8%),had B-Blood Group, while 140(35.1%) donors had O-Blood group, 93(23.3%) had A-Blood group, and only 23(5.8%) had AB group. Rh positivity was noted in 378(94.7%) of the donors. Different blood groups were responsible for the changes in the platelet parameters, especially MPV and PDW, as there was a significant difference in MPV and PDW values (p-value<0.05). Conclusion: While determining the presence of a relationship between the ABO blood group system and platelet indices, it is observed that there is a high frequency of cardiovascular diseases among B and AB blood groups in young, healthy adults.Keywords: Blood groups, Body mass index, Mean platelet volume, Platelet count, Platelet distribution width.

No diseases are known to result from the lack of expression of ABO blood group antigens, but the susceptibility to a number of diseases has been linked with a person's ABO phenotype. A cross sectional study conducted at research laboratory of Gharb El-Niel College from May to August 2022, to estimate the relation of ABO blood group on fibrinogen levels and platelet count in apparently healthy Sudanese subjects. For the A positive blood group there was significant decreased in the fibrinogen level when compared with the B⁺, O⁺ and O⁻ blood group, and in significant differences with the AB⁺ and A⁻. For the platelets counts; there was significant increased with AB⁺ and in significant differences with other blood groups, for the B⁺; there was significant decreased in the fibrinogen level when compared with other blood groups, however in the platelets count there was insignificant differences in all blood grouping except the O⁺. In addition, there was significant decreased in the fibrinogen level in O⁺ when compared with the AB⁺ and A⁻. AB⁺ when compared with the O⁻, and A⁻ when compared with O⁻. Regarding the platelets count there was significant differences when O⁺ blood group compared with AB⁺, and AB⁺ when compared with the A⁻ and O⁻. There were insignificant differences when the fibrinogen level and platelets count compared with the age and gender. Finally, there was a clear significant decreased in the fibrinogen levels and platelets count among the individuals with different ABO blood group. Objectives: The ABO gene locus has been identified to be associated with myocardial infarction in patients with coronary heart disease. The primary focus of this hospital-based study was to explore the relationship of ABO blood groups and ABO genotypes with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in Karachi, Pakistan. Methods: In a comparative cross-sectional study, an equal number of adult AMI patients and healthy controls (n=275 in each group; age range 30-70 years, both males and females) were recruited from the Aga Khan University and NICVD, Karachi, with informed consent. The blood samples were analyzed for ABO blood groups and other biomarkers. PCR followed by RFLP techniques were employed for determining the ABO genotypes. Multinomial regression was used to evaluate the association of genotypes with the risk of AMI. Results: Thirteen different combinations of ABO genotypes were observed while the O2O2 and A2A2 genotypes were not detected. No significant association based on the distribution of blood groups A, B, O and AB among AMI patients and healthy individuals was observed. The odds of AMI were 3.32 times in subjects with BB genotype as compared to subjects with OO genotypes after adjustment of age, gender, body mass index, heart rate, total cholesterol, and waist circumference [AOR (95% CI) =3.32 (1.36-8.08), p-value =0.008]. Conclusion: Our hospital-based study indicates that ABO genotype BB was significantly associated with the risk of AMI.
