The Relationship between Paranormal Belief and the hexaco Domains of Personality

Abstract: Thehexaco-pi-r(Ashton & Lee, 2007) has been presented as an alternative measure of the Five Factor Model, with the inclusion of the dimension of honesty/humility. This new measure of personality was utilised alongside the Revised Paranormal Belief Scale (rpbs) in a correlational design among 137 undergraduate students in Wales. “…Third, a positive correlation between PEUBI‐TR and Emotional stability factor. This partially replicates the observed pattern of effects in past research, since there have been reports of positive (e.g., Abdel‐Khalek, 2010; Saroglou, 2002), negative (e.g., Saroglou, 2002), and null (e.g., Chauvin & Mullet, 2021; Williams & Roberts, 2016) relationships between religious beliefs and emotional stability 3 . “…Henningsgaard and Arnau (2008) found a covariation between some Big Five factors such as consciousness with the Spirituality Meaning Scale (Mascaro et al, 2004). Consciousness also correlated with Tobacyk's RPBS in a study by Williams and Roberts (2016). Convergence between results from these and our study suggests that our scale was quite effective in measuring the construct of paranormal beliefs.…”

“…Scholars have established that, for as long as there have been records of religion there have also been dissenters who reject the gods (Whitmarsh 2016), sometimes vocally (Jacoby 2005) but other times in secret in order to avoid persecution (Hecht 2004). Such individuals will have a proclivity to reject supernatural belief, will be dispositionally inclined toward openness (Williams & Roberts 2016; though see Gurney et al 2013;Saroglou 2002), and will be able and willing to suffer the consequences of their decisions (Rogers 2006;Edgell, Frost & Stewart 2017).…”
