The Relationship Between Negative Affect, State Mindfulness, and the Role of Personality

Abstract: Objectives Are affective states influencing state mindfulness and can this explain the link between personality and mindfulness? Mindfulness is commonly thought to decrease negative affect, but a number of studies have reported reductions in mindfulness in negative affect situations. This highlights a potential mechanism explaining previously observed negative relationships between individual differences such as Neuroticism and mindfulness, via their shared relationship with negative affect. … Show more

“…Depending on the individuals’ trait levels, they react differently to externally induced positive or negative moods [ 43 ]. However, a recent study failed to show the relationship between negative affect reactivity and the personality trait of neuroticism [ 44 ]. “…Relatedly, mindfulness may foster interoceptive awareness, sensing/integrating of internal processes, which may help to regulate and improve negative affect as well as behaviors like food intake (Füstös et al, 2013; Hanley et al, 2017). Alternatively, negative affect may degrade mindfulness (Karl & Fischer, 2022). According to affect regulation theory, loss‐of‐control (inability to stop eating over any amount of food) and overeating (consumption of a large amount without loss‐of‐control; van Strien et al, 2012) occurs, in part, as an attempt to regulate negative mood (Egbert et al, 2022; Elliott et al, 2010).…”
