The relationship between lichen planus and hepatitis C in dermatology outpatients in Kerman, Iran

Abstract: The findings indicate that an investigation for HCV infection should not necessarily be performed in all patients with LP. It is recommended that further studies should focus on larger groups in other regions of Iran to determine whether testing for HCV infection is necessary in patients with LP.

“…Male preponderance (60%) was noted in lichen planus in our study. Similar findings were noted by Rahnama et al 6 and Seema 5 on the contrary studies by Singh and Kanwar 3 , Kumar et al 4 and Anand 7 showed female preponderance. In the present study, 35 cases (57.37%) were classical Lichen planus.…”

“…Indeed, the other Iranian case-control studies were in agreement with this hypothesis and reported non-significant associations between these conditions. Specifically, Rahnama et al [13] reported an OR of 0.7 (95CI 0.1-6.9), while the OR estimated using the data reported by Ghaderi and Makhmalbaf [14] was 6.4 (95CI 0.7-62.6). The overall HCV prevalence among OLP patients, obtained merging the data of all Iranian studies, was in line with HCV prevalence in the general population.…”

“…One study [20] was not included because HCV prevalence was not assessed through anti-HCV antibodies, while two studies [21,22] were excluded because control subjects were not examined for anti-HCV antibodies. The remaining primary studies, listed along with the present study, in Table 4, amounted to 43 [6,8,13,14,. In order not to miss important information, twelve studies with zero values among exposed cases and/or controls were corrected using the centre of the distance between zero and the lowest detectable level.…”
