The Relationship between Heart Rate Variability and Serum Cytokines in Chronic Chagasic Patients with Persistent Parasitemia

Abstract: Both chagasic groups present an autonomic impairment using linear methods. The nonlinear methods revealed that the ChHD group had a higher cardiovascular risk. Serum cytokine concentrations between chagasic patients were similar. However, ChHD showed higher concentrations of IL-10 and lower of IFN-γ, suggesting some established process of immune regulation.

“…In other studies, IL-10 has been attributed to eliciting an increased susceptibility to infection, regulation of chemokine production (eg. MCP-1) recruiting monocytes/macrophages, endothelial activation with IL-6 production, and increased nitric oxide production [29,42,43]. This study found that IL-10 levels were higher in CC and there was an inverse correlation with EF.…”

“…This finding raises the possibility that the autonomic dysfunction associated with chagasic infection could be an influential or determining cause of immunological alterations contributing to the development and maintenance of chronic Chagas chronic infection. In this regard, an association between cardiac autonomic dysfunction and altered levels of cytokines was recently demonstrated in chagasics with the indeterminate and cardiac forms and with sustained parasitemia; the heart disease patients showed higher concentrations of IL-10 and lower IFN-γ, suggesting some disturbance of the process of immune regulation 89 .…”

“…A decrease in HRV is reportedly characterized by autonomic dysfunction and ventricular dysfunction in patients with Chagas disease 18 . Llaguno et al 18 demonstrated autonomic dysfunction in patients with chronic Chagas disease and high cardiovascular risk, but they failed to relate this condition with serum cytokine levels 19 . Our results suggest that TNF-α blockade induces autonomic dysfunction during the acute phase of infection in mice with Chagas disease and that cardiovascular function worsens after treatment.…”
