The relationship between cd5‐expressing b lymphocytes and serologic abnormalities in rheumatoid arthritis patients and their relatives

Abstract: The influence of genetic factors on the expression of CD5+ B lymphocytes and their relationship to a broad spectrum of autoantibodies was investigated in a study of 12 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and 52 of their healthy first-degree relatives.

“…These 4C8-secreting cells were reported to have the surface phenotype of B1 cells (31,32). B1 cells have been observed in elevated numbers in patients with the autoimmune diseases Sjogren's syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis, suggestive that these cells may have some role to play in the pathogenicity of certain autoimmune diseases (33,34).…”

“…These selfantigen-reactive antibodies may bind to their own components, initiate an inflammatory response, and contribute to the pathogenesis of various autoimmune disorders. Indeed, elevated numbers of CD5 ϩ B-1 cells producing a variety of self-reactive antibodies have been reported in patients suffering from Sjögren's syndrome (11) and rheumatoid arthritis (42). Also, the close association of H. pylori infection with several autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (22), Sjögren's syndrome (12), and ITP (17), has been shown.…”

“…In addition to CD22 and CD19, the size of the B-1a cell pool appears to be under genetic regulation. It has indeed been established that twins have the same levels of B-1a [105], and that the relatives of patients with RA offer a similar frequency of B-1a cells as the proband [106].…”
