The relationship between age-stereotypes and health locus of control across adult age-groups

Abstract: Our findings suggest that the relationship between age-stereotypes and health locus of control dimensions must be considered within the context of age and gender. The findings point to the importance of targeting health promotion and interventions through addressing negative age-attitudes.

“…Since that time, much of the research exploring and theoretically extending the construct has been conducted in fields outside of the organizational sciences (e.g., health care, psychiatry, and developmental psychology). In particular, key advances have transpired in research that associates locus of control with physical and mental‐health‐related issues and outcomes (e.g., Sargent‐Cox & Anstey, ). While these advances were occurring, organizational researchers have generally focused on identifying additional outcomes of locus of control (e.g., Ng et al, ; Q. Wang et al, ) or relationships that are constrained or bounded by it (e.g., De Hoogh & Den Hartog, ).…”

“…One of the major mechanisms of the stereotype embodiment is the reduction of perceived control, as older adults who feel more in control are able to offset the ‘negative’ effects of the stereotypes 21. In one early study on personal control and ageing in a nursing home, residents who were instructed to think of themselves as more independent and had more responsibility for their daily activities, rather than relying purely on caregiver or nursing staff, lived longer than those who were treated just as nicely but were not provided with activities that would increase their perceived independence 22.…”
