Purpose: To determine the relationship between social media usage characteristics and alexithymia in nursing students.Design and methods: The study was conducted with 272 nursing students between November and December 2018 in Turkey. Data were collected using an information form to determine the sociodemographic and social media usage characteristics of the students, and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale.Findings: According to the results of this study, nursing students use Instagram the most. As time spent on social media increases, the alexithymia score increases and students have difficulty recognizing their feelings.Practice implications: As the use of social media by nursing students affects their mental process and behavior patterns, the results of social media applications, which witness a wide range of feelings, thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors, should be included in the nursing curriculum. K E Y W O R D S alexithymia, computer communication, nursing, social media 1 | INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The use of computer-mediated communication is becoming widespread and preferred over face-to-face communication. 1 With the beginning of Facebook use in 2006, this process has gained speed, and social media is currently used for education, communication, and entertainment purposes. 2,3 Social networking sites, such as Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat, help users stay in touch with friends and family, discover what is happening in the world, and express what is important to them. Social media is a platform for information exchange and an environment that enables users to establish new relationships or protect existing ones. 4,5As a result of the widespread use of the internet and smartphones, individuals can share information and images instantly without time and space restrictions. Oral mucosa pressure ulcers (PUs) can result in frequent pain and discomfort, and have negative effects on quality of life. We aimed to examine attitude, barriers/facilitators of oral mucosa PU prevention, the ability to differentiate oral mucosa PU, and to identify factors influencing PU prevention performance intention. This was a cross-sectional descriptive study of 112 nurses in seven tertiary hospitals and three secondary hospitals. The data collection period was from August to December 2018. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and multiple regression were used. The mean score of attitudes toward oral mucosa PU prevention was 3.74 ± 0.39. Barriers to oral mucosa PU prevention were 5.65 ± 1.66, and facilitators were 5.35 ± 1.34. The mean correct answer rate of visual differentiation ability was 13%. The factors affecting intention to perform oral mucosa PU prevention were facilitators of oral mucosa PU prevention (β = 0.32, p = 0.001) and attitude (β = 0.26, p = 0.005). To increase intention to perform oral mucosa PU prevention, positive attitudes and enhanced facilitators should be encouraged. Therefore, standardized guidelines and strategies, such as educational opportunities and allocation of resources and personnel focused on oral mucosa PU prevention, need to be provided.

Nursing Students’ Acceptance Intention of a Smart Device, Information Literacy, and Problem-Solving Confidence

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between nursing students’ acceptance intention of a smart device, information literacy, and problem-solving confidence to explore the factors that may improve nursing students’ problem-solving confidence. Data were collected from 450 nursing students between July and August 2019 in two cities in Korea. The results showed that there is a positive correlation between problem-solving confidence and acceptance intention (r = 0.353, p < 0.001) and between problem-solving confidence and information literacy (r = 0.501, p < 0.001). Further, participants with high acceptance intention of a smart device and information literacy scores had significantly higher problem-solving confidence (t = 5.447, p < 0.001; t = 10.072, p < 0.001) than participants with low acceptance intention. In addition, in the logistic regression the odds ratio between the acceptance intention of a smart device, information literacy, and problem-solving confidence groups was odds ratio 2.071 (p < 0.001, CI: 1.412–3.037) and odd ratio 4.966 (p < 0.001, CI: 3.298–7.477). To improve nursing students’ problem-solving confidence, educational strategies should be developed to build information experience and information utilization capabilities.
