The Relationship Among Gender Role Conflict, Normative Male Alexithymia, Men’s Friendship Discords With Other Men, and Psychological Well-Being

Abstract: This study examined the triadic relationship of gender role conflict (GRC), normative male alexithymia (NMA), and men's friendships qualities with other men as well as the impact of this triadic relationship on men's (N = 216) psychological well-being (PWB). Bivariate correlations revealed significant correlations among all four variables. High levels of NMA and friendship discords factored in as the best predictor of men's PWB, and accounted for the 37% variation in overall PWB scores with an effect size of f… Show more

“…We observed statistically significant correlations between NMA, perceived social support, and self-reported depressive symptoms among active and retired players. These results align with previous studies indicating that greater NMA is associated with lower psychological wellbeing (Guvensel et al, 2017). The finding that lower perceived social support was associated with greater depressive symptomatology is also unsurprising in the context of previous research showing social connectedness is protective against depression in athletes (Armstrong & Oomen-Early, 2009).…”

“…Researchers propose that NMA occurs on a continuum that corresponds to the degree of socialization to masculine gender norms (Levant et al, 2014). NMA is associated with poor communication quality (Karakis & Levant, 2012), lower relationship satisfaction (Lentz, 2017), and decreased psychological wellbeing (Guvensel, Dixon, Chang, & Dew, 2017). These findings align with masculine dysfunction strain theory (Levant, 1996), which posits that pressure to adhere to masculine gender norms can be a psychological burden for men, resulting in increased anxiety and depression.…”

“…Wong and colleagues have also found that restricted emotionality is associated with unfavorable attitudes toward emotional expression ( Wong, Pituch, & Rochlen, 2006 ). Furthermore, GRC has been linked to alexithymia ( Guvensel, Dixon, Chang, & Dew, 2017 ). In sum, there appears to be a relationship between GRC and measures of unwillingness or inability to engage with internal emotional experiences.…”

“…The relationship between femininity and life satisfaction was only seen in women who had high levels of social support, and the relationship between self-esteem and life satisfaction was only seen in men who had low levels of masculinity, according to research on the relationship between femininity and life satisfaction in men and women. These findings shed light on the importance of gender roles observance in life happiness (Guvensel, Dixon, Chang, & Dew, 2018).…”
