The Relation Between Diabetes Mellitus and Clinical Syphilis

Abstract: At first the fluid came from the needle under pressure, often flowing in a steady stream which rather rapidly decreased to a normal flow. We did not limit ourselves to a definite amount, but allowed the fluid to escape until the rate reached normal. In one case the delirium apparently began to return, leading us to repeat the puncture ; here there was no excessive pressure to the flow, and only a small amount was withdrawn. The symptoms increased no further, and the patient went on toward recovery. It is interes… Show more

“…association between syphilis and DM has been a point of debate for more than a century. Necropsy results from six patients with DM revealed signs of syphilis, leading to the conclusion at that time that syphilis was one of the causes of DM [14,15]. A more recent study also reported a higher prevalence of DM in patients with neurosyphilis compared to non-neurosyphilis patients, non-syphilis patients, and healthy individuals [16].…”

“…However, since the 1940s, discussion about the association of syphilis with DM has been rare, let alone the relationship between NS and DM. Half a century ago, there were two main opinions on the relationship between syphilis and DM: a few studies reported that syphilis could directly or indirectly induce DM, whereas others did not think there was any association between the two conditions . Based on clinical observation and experience, we reinvestigated this issue from a new perspective: is there any association between NS and DM, not between syphilis and DM?…”

“…Half a century ago, there were two main opinions on the relationship between syphilis and DM: a few studies reported that syphilis could directly or indirectly induce DM, 19,20 whereas others did not think there was any association between the two conditions. [21][22][23] Based on clinical observation and experience, we reinvestigated this issue from a new perspective: is there any association between NS and DM, not between syphilis and DM? We found significantly higher FPG and HbA1c levels in patients with NS compared with the other three groups in the present study.…”

“…In transgenic mice carrying the carboxyl-terminus of the beta APP gene, Aβ is demonstrated not only in the brain, but also in the kidney and pancreas [ 89 - 91 ]. Formation of Aβ plaques is also observed in the pancreas in transgenic NORBA mice overexpressing human APP [ 92 ].…”

“…Circulating LPS is higher in diabetic subjects compared to non-diabetics [ 117 - 119 ]. The association of diabetes with tuberculosis, syphilis and leprosy is well known [ 89 , 90 , 120 - 127 ]. It is noteworthy that various bacterial and viral infections, including H. pylori, enteroviruses, rubella, mumps, rotavirus, parvovirus and cytomegalovirus (CMV) have been proposed as potential etiological factors in type 1 diabetes [ 128 - 130 ].…”
