University spin-offs (USOs) are companies created to commercialize knowledge or technology developed in academia; thus, their major contribution to the knowledge economy is their ability to generate innovation. Following the Resource-Based View of the Firm and the Knowledge Spillover Theory of Entrepreneurship, it was stated that fostering mechanisms at university level and at regional level may positively influence the USOs innovation. Based on a sample of 621 Italian USOs, we show that the positive impact of the university context is more crucial compared with those of the regional context. In particular, the university affiliated business incubators and Science Parks, jointly with the university financial resources, seem to promote the innovation efforts of USOs. These evidences rise the need of a resilient partnership among all the contextual players involved in the spillover processes, mainly at regional level, in order to effectively exploit the potential innovative efforts of the university start-ups.

The Spin-Off as an Instrument of Sustainable Development: Incentives for Creating an Academic USO

In recent years, universities and public authorities have increasingly focused on creating USOs (university spin-offs) as a method of transferring research results to society and of achieving the sustainable development sought by European institutions. However, the success of these policies depends on the appeal of creating a USO for academics. The aim of this research was to examine the relative importance of certain factors that may boost academic entrepreneurship and, therefore, to guide public policies. To do this, a qualitative study was carried out among 42 researchers from Spanish universities and research centres to understand their motivations for creating a USO. A quantitative study was then carried out, based on Conjoint Analysis and with a sample of 1726 academics, to identify the relative importance of six conditions that influence their predisposition to become entrepreneurs. This technique is seldom used in the field of entrepreneurship and, to the best of our knowledge, has never been used before to analyse academic entrepreneurship. The results of the study show that personal economic benefit is clearly the factor that heightens the intention to create a USO the most. Research benefit, CV benefit, support programmes, teaching reduction and personal cost are of lesser importance. The study also concludes that there are few differences according to the academic’s profile.

Traditionally, firms tend to incline toward financial performance and profitability to surge shareholder's wealth. In the modern day, in addition to financial performance, innovative and environmental performance has also become a central effort. However, all firms are not flourished in the achievement of financial, innovative, and environmental performance, particularly small‐ and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs), which need adequate financial resources due to lack of resources and can search for opportunities to boost their performance. This research examines the role of financial availability in financial, innovative, and environmental performance with a mediating role of opportunity recognition. Empirical evidence is collected through structured questionnaires from 347 SMEs operating in the emerging market Pakistan. Hypotheses are tested in Analysis of a Moment Structure (AMOS) using structural equation modeling. Results indicate that satisfactory financial resources significantly contribute to financial and innovative performance but play an insignificant role in environmental performance as well. In addition, firms with enough financial capital recognize new opportunities significantly via opportunity recognition mediator, where partially mediating the relation between financial availability and financial/innovative performance. However, firms fully mediate the link between financial availability and environmental performance. Our research findings recommend CEOs and top managers to utilize their financial resources in an efficient way to achieve the advantage of the new opportunity recognition, superior financial, innovative, and environmental performance.
