The redox signal: A physiological perspective

Abstract: A signal in biology is any kind of coded message sent from one place in an organism to another place. Biology is rich in claims that reactive oxygen and nitrogen species transmit signals. Therefore, we define a “redox signal as an increase/decrease in the level of reactive species”. First, as in most biology disciplines, to analyze a redox signal you need first to deconstruct it. The essential components that constitute a redox signal and should be characterized are: (i) the reactivity of the specific reactive… Show more

“…It seems thus, although an important amount of data from clinical studies are nowadays available for several redox biomarkers and diseases, [58][59][60] none of them has been linked quantitatively to a meaningful change (improvement or deterioration) of a physiological or clinical outcome. 61,62 Apparently, several analytical issues exist in redox biology measurements; 63 however, in our point of view, MCIDs can be of critical importance in order to enrich redox measurements with a translational potential, at least as a preliminary step, bearing in mind that no redox biomarker is used in clinical practice. 64 Based on the above, it becomes evident that much work needs to be done at a fundamental level in the field of redox biology to rationalize personalized redox treatments.…”

“…This was the reason why we used only SWC in our redox analyses, given that the present study was not designed to determine and define redox MCIDs. It seems thus, although an important amount of data from clinical studies are nowadays available for several redox biomarkers and diseases, 58–60 none of them has been linked quantitatively to a meaningful change (improvement or deterioration) of a physiological or clinical outcome 61,62 . “…Redox signaling processes concern all these pathways, which present an increase or decrease of reactive species [ 9 ]. Herein, we present a brief overview of the main cellular pathways affected by these processes, which will be subsequently addressed more in-depth for their correlation with the pathogenesis of neurological disorders.…”

“…Damage from aberrant reactivity of free radicals could be a combination of a raised environmental derived free radical burden and antioxidant deficit. It should however be borne in mind that low-level of oxidative stress may be beneficial to the organism especially in signaling in the immune system (Pizzino et al, 2017;Flohé, 2020;Margaritelis et al, 2022).…”
