“…Several recent publications have focused on microwave-promoted reactions of Os 3 (CO) 12 , including its conversion to Os 3 (m-H) 2 (CO) 10 , [Os 10 C(CO) 24 ] 2À , Os 3 (CO) 11 (NCMe), Os 3 (m-H)(m-OH)(CO) 10 , and Os 6 (CO) 18 [21e24]. We chose to use a microwave reactor to carry out reactions between Os 3 (CO) 12 and various carboxylic acids with the intent of improving the yield of known Os 2 (m-O 2 CR) 2 (CO) 6 compounds as well as synthesizing new complexes including one with bridging aromatic carboxylate ligands.…”

“…The metal carbonyl which we have chosen as the SERS reporter is an osmium carbonyl cluster; it is oxygen‐ and moisture‐stable, and very robust insofar as organometallic compounds go . The mode of interaction with metallic nanomaterials has also been well‐characterized by spectroscopic techniques . Successful deposition of the osmium carbonyl cluster (Os 3 (CO) 10 (μ‐H))(μ‐SCH 2 CH 2 COOH)) onto BMFON was confirmed by the presence of signals in the 1800–2200 cm −1 region (Figure B); the vibrational bands at 1960, 2030 and 2109 cm −1 suggest that the osmium carbonyl cluster was covalently bonded onto the gold surface as an Os 3 (CO) 10 (μ‐Ag)(μ‐SCH 2 CH 2 COOH) species …”

“…The synthesis of [Ru 2 (MPA) 4 (CO) 4 ] n oligomer was modified from the reaction of triruthenium clusters with bifunctional ligands previously reported by Leong and co-workers [20]. Briefly, toluene (15 ml) containing 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA, 10 À3 M) and triruthenium dodecacarbonyl (Ru 3 (CO) 12 , 2 Â 10 À4 M) was purged with nitrogen gas for 10 min.…”

“…MPA molecules are known to utilize only the thiol (SH) groups for reaction with Ru 3 (CO) 12 to form Ru carbonyl oligomers of formula [Ru 2 (MPA) 4 (CO) 4 ] n (Fig. 3a) [20,25,26]. Hence the oligomers still possess free carboxyl groups which can readily bind to Ag or Au surfaces during nanoparticle formation.…”
