The reacTable

Abstract: In recent years we have seen a proliferation of musical tables. Believing that this is not just the result of a tabletop trend, in this paper we first discuss several of the reasons for which live music performance and HCI in general, and musical instruments and tabletop interfaces in particular, can lead to a fertile two-way cross-pollination that can equally benefit both fields. After that, we present the reacTable, a musical instrument based on a tabletop interface that exemplifies several of these potentia… Show more

“…Past work that combines tactile and tangible input in a single system is largely found in tangible additions to tabletop displays where props are tracked using fiducial markers. Good examples of this approach are Jorda et al's [40] prototype for live music performance as well as Al-Megren and Ruddle's [1] setup for abstract data analysis. An example of such a combination for spatial 3D visualization is Sultanum et al's [69] table-based system for exploring geologic reservoir data.…”

“…A Digital Orchestra (DO) can be composed of a single multi-user DMI [12]; a homogeneous collection of identical DMIs, such as in most laptop [24] and mobile phone [18] orchestras ; or a set of DMIs of different types. In turn, DMIs may rely on various hardware interaction devices, audio and visual feedback modalities, software architectures and sound synthesis techniques.…”

“…The reacTable is a comparatively long project whose final system was presented by Jourdà et al [11]. This tabletop system is capable of detecting TUIs and touch, but all of its components are located below the tabletop's surface.…”
