The rare alleleSOD-A2in the Italian population

Abstract: Data are reported on the distribution of SOD-A electrophoretic phenotypes in the Italian population, and on the concentration of SODA-A-2-1 phenotype in a family group of a small village. The frequency of the rate allele SOD-A(2) is estimated and compared with the frequency in other populations. By applying a model of population dynamics for rare neutral genes estimates are derived of the mean first arrival time and mean age, in generations, of SOD-A(2) allele.

“…So far. the homo zygote SOD A 2 was detected only in 2 out of 1.710 Swedes and in 1 Finn out of 315 [Beckman and Pakarinen, 1973]; a lower enzymatic activity seems to be associated to the allele SOD A- ; however, Crosti et al [1976] found that in the heterozygote SOD A 2-1, the enzyme activity was equal to that of the common SOD A 1 phenotype. Moreover, Markulund et al [1976] showed that the activity of the purified products of the two alleles does not differ significantly.…”

“…According to Kirk [1975] the distribution of SOD A2 may be the result of the conquest and mi grations of the Vikings in the 9th century. Crosti et al [1976] suggested a new differ ent mutational event in Italy at a relatively recent time, and Papiha and Al-Agidi [1976] think that the SOD A2gene found in Iraq originated in Italy. According to Spedini et al [1982] the Central African Re public SOD A2 gene also results from a re cent mutational independent event.…”

“…Several hypotheses have been proposed regarding the origin and distribution of the SOD A*2 allele in different popualation groups [Beckman, 1973;Kirk, 1974;Crosti et al, 1976;Papiha and Al-Agidi, 1976;Spedini et al, 1982;Weimer et al, 1987]. However, the most likely explana tion appears to be that offered by Kirk [ 1974] who suggested that the SOD A *2 al lele was spread across Europe by Vikings through their successive migrations from their homeland in Scandinavia.…”
