The rapid uptake of robotic prostatectomy and its collateral effects

Abstract: The emergence and subsequent rapid uptake of robotic radical prostatectomy has changed the face of prostate cancer care in the United States (US). Aggressive direct-to-consumer marketing by hospitals and the surgical robot manufacturer have helped create a demand for robotic prostate surgery, despite studies showing little benefit in functional or oncologic outcomes of robotic over open radical prostatectomy.1-3 Currently, the majority of all radical prostatectomies performed in the US are done robotically, wi… Show more

“…Since first described in 2001, robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) has continued to gain widespread acceptance with less postoperative morbidity, reduced blood loss, along with some supportive data of improved early continence and erectile function recovery. [1][2][3] For these reasons, over 80% of radical prostatectomies are performed robotically in the United States, 4 as well as growing percentages globally. Moreover, acquisition of robotic skills is crucial in the early learning curve particularly for residents, fellows, and urologists already established in practice.…”

“…About 69% to 85% of prostatectomies are performed robotically in the United States. 2 Although RARP has not been widely adopted in Canada, there is a growing pool of expertise and interest. There are presently 19 operational daVinci surgical systems (Intuitive Surgical Inc.) in Canada (personal communication via email, Daniel Minogue from Minogue Medical Inc., February 14, 2013).…”
