The Radiolysis of Aqueous Perchloric Acid Solutions1

Abstract: 3107reactions can account for the production of stable molecules of mass lower than the molecular weight of the parent molecule in the radiolysis of hydrocarbons.Acknowledgment. We are very grateful to Mr. W. C. Gieger for performing these experiments with his accustomed competence.

“…From the viewpoint of radiolysis, the reducing species required for the generation of Cl − are produced by radiolysis in either water or ethanol (Spothem-Maurizot et al, 2008). However, in the case of water, the hydroxyl radical oxidizes ClO − 3 to ClO − 4 , which has quite low reaction rates with e − aq and H (Katakis & Allen, 1964). It is therefore possible that the presence of ClO − 4 prevents further reactions, resulting in suppression of NaCl crystallization.…”

“…13 However, the production yield of these species is constant over time and no stabilisation is observed. 6,13 Thus, the BMS increase observed in the long term could be assigned to secondary product formation. In order to prove this effect, measurements were made using the Evans method on water samples containing ClO 4 À , ClO 3 À and Cl À ions (E4 M), respectively.…”

“…The reaction of perchlorate ions with free radicals generated in water is known to be slower than for other anions such as nitrates or chlorides. 6 Moreover, it has been reported that degradation products are mainly formed by the direct action of radiation on perchlorate ions. 7 Thus, this secondary species formation (ClO 3…”
