The Radiologic Characteristics and Retinal Thickness Are Correlated With Visual Field Defect in Patients With a Pituitary Mass

Abstract: Background: Investigation of visual field defects (VFDs) is important to decide the treatment and to predict the prognosis in patients with a pituitary mass. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation among 2 diagnostic modalities-MRI and optical coherence tomography (OCT)-and VFDs. Methods: Consecutive patients who showed the presence of a pituitary mass on MRI and in whom ophthalmic examinations were performed were recruited. Height and volume of the mass, sagittal and coronal displacement of opti… Show more

“…As demonstrated in several previous studies, visual functional data and structural data including both retinal thickness and tumor biometrics show strong correlations in chiasmal compressing disorder. 16,21 However, visual recovery and structural data showed contradictory results in the current study. Two anatomical structures showed different efficacies in estimating the postoperative VFD restoration.…”

“…6,1820 Recently, our study group reported that biometrics measured by OCT and MRI reflect VFD well and that these two factors are significantly correlated. 21 However, studies investigating these tumor metrics and visual prognosis have revealed conflicting results. 2,3,22…”

“…Because highly myopic patients have a higher diopter accompanied by astigmatism, vitreous opacity and other features, and their fundus lesions are not easily visible under direct test lens, so fundus fluorography is the best method for screening fundus lesions in them [ 17 , 18 ]. Fundus fluorescence imaging can present retinal and choroidal blood circulation, and dynamically and objectively record small changes in the center and periphery of the macula in affected eyes of patients with high myopia, which is beneficial for providing an objective basis for clinical treatment.…”

“…Binasal thinning of the GCC has been reported to precede bitemporal VF defects in patients with chiasmal lesions (17–19). The nasal GCC is normally thicker than the temporal side in healthy subjects, and loss of this asymmetry is also indicative of chiasm compression (18).…”
