The Pyroelectric Properties of SBN Crystals with Different Composition

Abstract: Influence of the strontium concentration on the ferroelectric properties of SBN crystals in a wide temperature range was studied. It is shown that at room temperature in SBN crystals without relaxor properties the value of the pyroelectric coefficient is smaller than that of relaxor-like SBN. The relaxor properties are at the origin of occurrence in these crystals of an inversion layer and unstable polarization state.

“…1). At the same time the specific feature of the polarization distribution through the thickness (smaller polarization values at the +P s side) in CBN28 is similar to that of SBN61 and SBN75 crystals [10], which are known as ferroelectric relaxors. It may be supposed that the relaxor state of CBN28 discussed in [6 -8] does not exist primordially (immediately after growth) but arises after some external influence.…”

“…At the same time, the main attribute of ferroelectric-relaxor behaviort is the frequency dependence of the dielectric maximium [2]. So it is of interest to study the CBN crystals with different calcium content keeping in view that in related SBN crystals the existence of relaxor properties depends on the concentration of Sr [2,9,10].…”

“…Strontium barium niobate Sr x Ba 1-x Nb 2 O 6 (SBN:x) lead-free environmentally friendly system represents a specific group of materials in which ferroelectric-relaxor behaviour depends on the x ratio Sr/(Ba+Sr) [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. This system is characterized by a number of useful properties including piezoelectric, electro-optic and pyroelectric ones.…”
