The psychophysiological nature of premature ejaculation

Abstract: The hypothesis that premature ejaculators (PEs) are less able than non-premature ejaculators (NPEs) to evaluate accurately their level of physiologically determined sexual arousal was tested. Twenty-six men (13 PEs and 13 NPEs) viewed a variety of videotaped vignettes, some of which were excerpts from sexually explicit films. Concurrent subjective (self-report) and objective (plethysmograph) ratings of sexual arousal were taken. Data revealed that both the PEs and NPEs were equally accurate in assessing their … Show more

“…Theo ries are emerging today on the genesis of premature ejacu lation; in fact this disorder is no longer regarded as a pure ly psychogenic disease but rather as a condition in which anxiety is one of the variables. The anxiety, in turn, is reputed as interacting with a 'somatic vulnerability' of the individual himself, thus leading to a short orgasmic laten cy [17,18].…”

“…Yet existing evidence does not necessarily support this expectation-the few studies investigating this possibility have found no differences between premature ejaculation (PE) and control groups on various erectile parameters, including latency to maximum erection. [7][8][9] On the other hand, and somewhat counterintuitive, even though PE men ejaculate rapidly, they might actually exhibit weaker erectile responses compared with functional counterparts. Specifically, compared with functional counterparts, men with PE report higher negative affect, greater difficulty getting an erection, and weaker overall erections-despite greater selfreported proximity to ejaculation-in response to erotic stimuli.…”
