The Protective Effects of Syzygium aromaticum Essential Oil Extract against Methotrexate Induced Hepatic and Renal Toxicity in Rats

Abstract: The essential oils were isolated from dried Syzygium aromaticum L. seeds by Cleavenger aperture extraction, and fractions were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). 53 components were detected in Syzygium aromaticum. The components were mainly 21 sesquiterpenes (39.62 %), eight monoterpenes (15.09%), onediterpene (1.88%). The leading components specific in the essential oil was eugenol (64.74 %), caryophyllene (14.36 %), 3-Allyl-6-methoxyphenyl acetate (13.28 %) and 1,4,7, Cycloundecatrie… Show more

“…Moreover, the efficacy of EOs on poultry and swine production have been identified and reviewed [18,19,20]. The cellular protective effects of EOs against drugs or xenobiotics are also described in the literature [21,22,23,24].…”

“…To find the protecting impact of S. aromaticum against ethotrexateinduced liver and kidney nephrotoxicity in rats, Al-Azem et al found that rats treated by methotrexate showed significant histopathological changes in renal tissues like degeneration, inflammatory cell infiltration, necrosis, and hemorrhage. While alteration of kidney tissues was less observed in rats treated with methotrexate and essential clove oil (16).…”

“…EOs are commonly associated with hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, changes in the blood vessels and oxidative stress that occur as a result of acute intoxication [ 184 ]. For example, a study focusing on the toxicity of an EO obtained from Syzygium aromaticum (containing mainly eugenol and caryophyllene) confirmed its negative effect on rats after intraperitoneal injection (0.125 mg/kg), resulting in changes of kidney tissue [ 185 ]. Some EOs have also been associated with toxicity to reproductive system.…”
