The proportion and trend of human immunodeficiency virus infections associated with men who have sex with men from Chinese voluntary blood donors: a systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: The relatively high proportion of MSM- associated HIV-positive donors is of concern. Efficient and effective measures focused on public education and improving knowledge of blood safety are needed to prevent this at-risk population from seeking HIV testing through blood donation. It is also imperative to expand the scope of postdonation nucleic acid testing to shorten the window period to improve blood supply safety in China.

“…HIV prevalence was stable in the first two populations, but it increased from 1.77% in 2000 to 5.98% in 2010 in MSM [ 16 ], and even higher prevalence was found in MSM in Eastern China (11.3%) [ 17 ] and in Tianjin city (12.4%) which was only 137 km from Beijing [ 18 ]. MSM sought free HIV testing through blood donation screening [ 19 ], or they also might seek HIV testing in our hospital. So, we presumed that the high HIV prevalence in 21–30-year-old men was highly associated with MSM.…”

“…The seeming lack of test seeking in the Netherlands may be due to the adequacy of current donor selection procedures and the availability of testing through regular public healthcare facilities in our country. It would be very interesting to apply this method to data from other regions, where donor screening may be less adequate .…”

“…Rather than out of purely altruistic reasons, some individuals may be driven to donate in order to have their infection status determined . As this motivation would be strongest following risk behaviour for acquiring infection, test‐seeking behaviour poses a threat for blood transfusion safety .…”

“…High‐risk individuals may underestimate or may not understand their risk and do not feel the need for infectious disease testing at VCTs, or they are aware of their risk and actively seek testing at blood banks . In the latter case, high‐risk donors knowingly use blood centers as HIV testing sites . In the former case, donors also end up using blood centers as HIV testing sites but may be doing so unintentionally .…”
