“…Studies of racial/ethnic differences in the incidence of the illness have been produced (Borjas, 2020), as have estimates of its immediate effect on consumer spending (Baker et al, 2020). The most closely related studies to this one examined the relation between lockdowns and the spread of the virus (Fang et al, 2020, andFriedson et al, 2020) and their potential impact on GDP (Inoue and Todo, 2020); and on the potential magnitude of employment losses due to social distancing (Koren and Peto, 2020). Here I examine the impacts on happiness by first in Section II linking the discussion to consumer theory.…”

“…However, the extent of lockdown varies across different countries and cities around the globe depending on the level of cases. Undoubtedly, the lockdown has put a temporary rest to a signi cant number of social and economic activities in the country and its people (Alvarez et al 2020;Inoue and Todo 2020;Karin et al 2020). Overall, the signi cance and impacts of lockdown are yet not well understood and likely to have a signi cant role in the restoration of air quality (Mahato et al 2020).…”

“…However, this goes at the cost of significant economic decline including growing debts and unemployment (for studies on (socio-)economic impacts see e.g. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]). While the Covid-19 pandemic directly threatens our health, the link between economic growth and our health is rather implicit and non-trivial.…”
