The prognostic role of microRNA in epithelial ovarian cancer: a systematic review of literature with an overall survival meta-analysis

Abstract: Objective: To accomplish a systematic review of literature with overall survival meta-analysis about the role of microRNA in epithelial ovarian cancer as prognostic and predictive factor to chemotherapy response. Methods: A search was conducted in the PubMed database, using the keywords "microRNA" and "ovarian cancer" or "miRNA" and "ovarian cancer". Original articles published before 02/02/2019 that had as main subject microRNA (miRNA) and ovarian cancer were included. We considered for inclusion only studies… Show more

“…These short miRNAs bind to the 3′-untranslated region (3′-UTRs) of their target genes through miRNA-response elements by complete or incomplete complementary base pairing, which results in translation suppression or target mRNA degradation [ 19 ]. miRNAs have also been demonstrated to be crucial regulators of EOC onset and progression and implicated in the control of multiple biological processes [ 20 , 21 ]. A close correlation between lncRNAs and miRNAs has been demonstrated during carcinogenesis and cancer progression.…”

“…Aberrant miRNA expression is associated with many diseases, including cancer, and miRNA-based drugs represent a novel and potentially powerful therapeutic approach [ 10 , 11 , 12 ]. Several studies have proposed using miRNAs as biomarkers for diagnosis, prediction and prognosis in cancer diseases, including AML [ 13 , 14 ]. Extracellular miRNAs, namely, those circulating in peripheral blood, seem to be attracting increasing attention from researchers.…”

“…Regarding EOC, a substantial amount of evidence has established that various lncRNAs are differentially expressed and function as tumor-inhibiting or tumor-promoting factors in regulating tumorigenesis [15][16][17]. microRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of single-stranded, non-coding RNA transcripts comprising [17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24] nucleotides [18]. These short miRNAs bind to the 3′-untranslated region (3′-UTRs) of their target genes through miRNA-response elements by complete or incomplete complementary base pairing, which results in translation suppression or target mRNA degradation [19].…”
