The prognostic impact of the platelet distribution width-to-platelet count ratio in patients with breast cancer

Abstract: Activated platelets promote tumor cell growth, angiogenesis, and invasion. Platelet activity can be inferred by platelet volume indices (PVIs), which include platelet distribution width (PDW), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width-to-platelet count ratio (PDW/P), and mean platelet volume-to-platelet count ratio. Platelets and platelet-related markers, such as the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, have been found to be significant prognostic factors in patients with breast cancer. However, the rol… Show more

“…Given the uncertainty of the MPV value, some researchers have begun to consider PDW to be a more reliable prognostic marker, 15 since PDW could be more straightforward in distinguishing activated platelets from swollen platelets. 16,23 However, in our study, PDW and PDW/P appeared not to serve as independent risk factors.…”

“…MPV and PDW, as platelet volume indices, are used to infer information on platelet size instead of quantity . MPV, which measures average platelet volume, reflects both proinflammatory and prothrombotic conditions; while PDW is used to describe platelet variation, heterogeneity and activity . Low MPV may occur from enhanced consumption of platelets and high‐grade inflammatory conditions .…”

“…Increased PDW values have been reported in patients with diabetes mellitus [5], cancer [6,7], and cardiocerebrovascular and respiratory disorders [8][9][10][11][12]. Moreover, higher PDW levels have recently been reported to be associated with increased morbidity and mortality among patients with critical illness [11,13], coronary artery disease [14][15][16][17], cancer [18][19][20][21], pulmonary embolism [10,22], and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [23]. Most previous studies on the clinical significance of PDW involved patients with specific disorders.…”

“…The ratio of platelet distribution width to platelet count is a commonly used measurement of platelet size and an alternative indicator of platelet activation (14). The ratio of platelet distribution width to platelet count has a significant prognosis in breast cancer patients (15), but its clinical significance in bladder cancer is not clear. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between the ratio of preoperative platelet distribution width to platelet count and the prognosis of patients with bladder cancer.…”
