The Production, Consumption, and Environmental Impacts of Rice Hybridization in the United States

Abstract: Th e introduction of hybrid rice in the United States gives producers an alternative to traditionally cultivated, conventional lines. Th e objective of our study is to estimate the economic (consumer and producer welfare) and environmental impacts of the commercial adoption of hybrid rice in the Mid-South of the United States. In our study, the revenue gains associated with hybrid adoption were estimated at an average of $76.24 million annually from 2003 to 2013, using existing research fi ndings in combinatio… Show more

“…The Hybrid rice is expected to result in 15–20% higher yields than the high yielding varieties [ 54 – 57 ]. The attainable yield of Hybrid rice is about 10 t/ha [ 54 , 55 ]. However, in 2015–16, the probability of achieving the yield of 8.0 t/ha was only 20%.…”

“…This low P fertilizer efficiency is common in Brazilian Cerrado savanna, whose soils have high acidity, high aluminum saturation and low bases saturation. The United Nations estimates that global population will increase 33% by 2050, from 7.2 billion today to 9.6 billion people (Nalley et al, 2017). Therefore, improving the fertilizer use efficiency is important to increase food supply, economy and environment safety, justifying the need for further studies in the area of agricultural systems.…”

“…An LCA was conducted to quantitatively compare the cradle-to-farm gate environmental impact of BPB following an approach similar to previous work [5,35,44]. An evaluation was conducted for counterfactual scenarios that consider the elimination of BPB under current climatic conditions and under a warming scenario with a 1°C increase in daily temperature.…”
