This quantitative research was aimed to find out whether there was any significant correlation between students’ reading habit and reading ability and also to find out the most correlated aspect of reading with students’ reading habit. The subject of research were thirty four students at MAN 1 Bandar Lampung. The researcher measured reading habit by using questionnaire. On other hand, reading test was used to assest students’ reading ability. The data from both instruments were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment. The result showed that there was a significant correlation between students’ reading habit and reading ability since the significant correlation coefficient was 0.000 and the r value was 0.840, which indicates very high correlation. Reference has shown as the most correlated aspect among reading aspects. Keywords: correlation, reading habit, reading ability

This study was aimed to find out the students’ difficulties in learning reading comprehension at a public high school in Bangka and the factors students have the difficulties. The subject of this study were the students of eighth grade in Bangka. Descriptive qualitative method was used. After the students’ test scores were obtained, then the students’ difficulties were analyzed. After that, the number of difficulties was counted by tabulating and calculating the results. The difficulties faced by the students were difficulty in answering main idea questions (53,67%), vocabulary questions (47,84%), and making inference questions (45,34%). Four factors were found causing the students’ difficulties, those are students’ interest in learning reading because they do not have the desire to read English text and they are not interested in reading. The second factor is students’ difficulties in reading text and translating the English meaning. The third factor is lack of facility in their school since it did not provide enough reading material for them. And the last factor is house environment, the role of a parent at home to give child support is crucial.

Small Group Discussion Toward Students’ Reading Comprehension: Effective

The purpose of this study was to find out whether or not small group discussion was effective in increasing students’ reading comprehension. Quantitative method was applied in this research by using quasi experimental design with two independent samples. The population taken in this research was the eighth grade students of SMP N 2 Takengon which was 221 students in total, while the samples were class VIII-2 and VIII-3 which were opted by applying random sampling. To collect the data, test was carried out to see the influence of applying SGD in the experimental class. From the data analysis, it can be seen that the mean score for experimental class before and after treatment were 46 and 66,5, while the mean score for control class were 45 and 53. The result of t-test showed that t-score (5,25) is higher than t-table (1,9) indicating that alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It signifies that small group discussion was effective in increasing students’ reading comprehension. It is suggested that the teachers apply this technique in teaching and learning.
