The prevalence of cobedding and SIDS-related child care practices in twins

Abstract: Despite a lack of evidence of the risks or benefits of cobedding, this practice was very popular, especially in the younger infants. More research is needed to establish the safety of cobedding in relation to the risk of SIDS.

“…176 Most cobedded twins are placed on their sides rather than supine. 174 Finally, cobedding of twins and higher-order multiples in the hospital setting might encourage parents to continue this practice at home. 176 Because the evidence for the benefits of cobedding twins and higher-order multiples is not compelling and because of the increased risk of SIDS and suffocation, the AAP believes that it is prudent to provide separate sleep areas for these infants to decrease the risk of SIDS and accidental suffocation.…”

“…With a few notable exceptions (1–3) investigations of sleeping arrangements for twins have largely been restricted to the practice of cobedding of hospitalized multiples (i.e. crib-sharing between multiple birth infants).…”
