The Prevalence of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease among Danes Aged 45–84 Years: Population-based Study

Abstract: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the leading causes of disability and death in the world. Many people with disease are undiagnosed or untreated due to lack of consensus about the definition of COPD. The objective was to estimate the prevalence of COPD in the Danish population aged 45-84 years and to identify the proportion of persons not receiving appropriate medical treatment. A population-based study in the two Danish counties (population aged 45-84 years = 299,000 persons) based on dat… Show more

“…1 A recent study based on 4757 patients from 155 general practices in two (out of 12) counties estimated the overall COPD prevalence in the Danish population to be 9%. 2 The value is in consistence with prevalence rates found in Spain (10.2%) 3 and Norway (11.6%). 4 The major environmental factor that causes COPD is tobacco smoke (both active 5 and passive smoking 6 ).…”

“…COPD now affects 8% of adults in the USA7 and more than 10% of adults in Denmark 8 9. In NTM case series worldwide, a high prevalence of comorbid chronic respiratory diseases (particularly COPD but also pneumoconiosis and bronchiectasis) has been observed affecting between 10% and 50% of all patients with NTM 1 5 10–12.…”

“…We found an overall prevalence of spirometric obstructive pattern of 10.7% (13.4% in men and 9.1% in women), which is similar to the COPD prevalence as defined by the GOLD guidelines, reported in multicenter survey in Spain, 24 and in line with other recent studies of COPD prevalence, that used both pre-bronchodilator and post-bronchodilator spirometry. 14,25,26 Notwithstanding, comparisons of our estimates to those of other studies should be made carefully, since differences can be explained by the heterogenity of the case definition, namely, whether or not post-bronchodilator data were used, or whether or not cases were defined by distinct population demography. There are several comorbidities traditionally associated with aging.…”
