The prevalence and characteristics of latent autoimmune diabetes in adults subset among type two diabetes mellitus patients in Northern Nigeria

Abstract: Introduction:Latent autoimmune diabetes in adult (LADA) is a form of Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) that occurs in adult or with advancing age. It commonly occurs in people aged ≥30 years and is characterized by initial response to oral hypoglycemic agents, lean body mass, and presence of glutamic acid decarboxylase autoantibody (GAD-Ab). It exhibits rapid deterioration of the pancreatic β-cells secretory function due to the destructive action of the autoantibodies. The prevalence of LADA among T2DM patients … Show more

“…Several studies reported that islet autoimmunity, including T cell-mediated cellular immunity (20, 21) and humoral immunity in which autoantibodies played a vital role (10, 11, 12), both contributed to the pathogenesis and development of not only T1DM, but also T2DM. Furthermore, a series of evidence clued that the associations between islet autoimmunity and clinical features in T2DM occurs to some extent (18, 22, 23).…”

“…2020;64/5 our study. While epidemiological studies have shown controversial results, some studies have reported a higher prevalence of LADA in men (12,36). This might be related to demographic features of the population and their genetic predisposition.…”

“…Screening for IA-2A positivity in the latter study increased the prevalence of islet autoantibody positivity to 7.3% [ 12 ]. Higher prevalence levels of GADA positivity in adult-onset diabetes have also been reported in Madagascar (12%) [ 15 ] and in West African populations in Nigeria (10.5–14%) [ 13 , 14 , 19 ] and Ghana (8.9–14.3%) [ 16 , 17 ].…”
