The article evaluates the amount of the consumed sewing thread for women’s underwear (underwear bras and panties). Based on the obtained findings, it was concluded that sewing thread amount depends enormously on the studied influential parameters. The present paper reports a contribution that allows industries and researchers to decrease the consumed amounts of sewing thread in case of women’s underwear and panties The study takes into account the different stitch structures and fabric characteristics that are usually used. The effects of influential input parameters, such as fabric thickness, number of assembled layers, stitch density, and tension of the thread, are investigated. Useful models have been found and can be used by industries to accuracy predict the thread consumption for women’s underwear and panties to launch the needed thread commands. The developed models use multiregressive method. In this study, the fabrics that have been considered are knitted fabrics because they are those used in women’s underwear. We found that women’s underwear bras consume more sewing threads than panties. Using linear regression method, good relationships (coefficients of correlation close to 1) between consumption behaviors and the investigated parameters such as fabric thickness, number of assembled layers, stitch number per centimeter, sizes and tension of threads, were found. Although, the increase of threads tension to sew female underwear decreases the consumed amount of threads, the increase of other studied parameters widely encourages the consumption values, especially for seams based on chain-stitch types.

Sewing thread is one of the most basic yet important components of a garment. Thread consumption for the lockstitch (Class 301) can be calculated by using its geometrical shape. This paper aims to develop a geometrical model to calculate the thread consumption for lockstitch (Class 301). Based on the basic geometry of lockstitch, a model has been proposed. The model is derived mathematically taking into account different variables: stitch length, stitch density, material thickness, and interlacing. Finally, the model was verified for 19 samples by comparing actual thread consumption with predicted thread consumption. The proposed model predicts the thread consumption with 97% accuracy. Sensitivity analysis is also performed to determine the significant influencing factor affecting the thread consumption. The proposed model can predict the thread consumption precisely for 301 lockstitch. Therefore, this model is useful for the apparel industry.

In this study; influence of selected physical properties of 100% cotton woven fabrics with different constructions on fabric sewability and bending strength properties were investigated. Sewability values of fabrics and needle penetration forces were tested by using L & M Sewability Tester. Weft and warp yarns of fabrics used in this study have the same yarn count (Ne50). Fabrics have same warp density (40 yarns/cm), three different of weft densities (26-30-34 yarns/cm). Different weaving structures like twill (2/2), panama (2/2) and plain were used. As a result of this study, it is proved that weaving structure and weft density of fabric are parameters effect sewability property of fabrics. The best sewability property obtained from the fabric which has panama weaving structure and the lowest weft density. The lowest bending strength value was obtained the fabric which has twill weave structure and lowest weft density.Key Words: Cotton fabrics, Sewability, Needle penetration force, Bending strength Pamuklu Kumaşların Dikilebilirlik ve Eğilme Dayanımı Özellikleri ÜzerineDeneysel bir Çalışma ÖzetBu çalışmanın amacı; farklı konstrüksiyona sahip %100 pamuklu dokuma kumaşların seçilmiş bazı fiziksel özelliklerinin kumaşın dikilebilirlik ve eğilme dayanımı özelliği üzerindeki etkisini araştırmaktır. İplik numaraları ve çözgü sıklıkları aynı olan kumaşların atkı sıklıkları ve örgü yapıları değişiklik göstermektedir. Kumaşların dikilebilirlik değerleri ve iğne batış kuvvetleri, L&M Dikilebilirlik Test Cihazı kullanılarak tespit edilmiştir. Çalışmada Ne 50 iplik numarasına sahip atkı ve çözgü iplikleri kullanılmıştır. Bezayağı, Dimi (2/2) olmak üzere üç farklı örgü yapısına sahip kumaşlar aynı çözgü sıklığına (40 tel/cm), üç farklı atkı sıklığına (26-30-34 tel/cm) sahiptir. Yapılan çalışma sonucunda kumaşın örgü yapısının ve atkı sıklığının kumaşın dikilebilirlik özelliğini etkileyen parametreler olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır. En iyi dikilebilirlik değeri; panama örgü yapısına ve en düşük atkı sıklığına sahip kumaşta elde edilmiştir. En düşük eğilme dayanımı ise; dimi örgü yapısına ve en düşük atkı sıklığına sahip kumaşta elde edilmiştir.
