The potential role of HCV core antigen testing in diagnosing HCV infection

Abstract: The potential uses of serological tests that detect HCV core antigens in biological fluids are highlighted. The most common serological tests utilized to detect exposure to HCV rely on the detection of antibodies to HCV. However, these tests cannot distinguish between individuals who have resolved their infection and those who remain actively infected with HCV. By contrast, the HCV core antigen test detects circulating HCV core antigen and identifies individuals who are actively infected with HCV. There is inc… Show more

“…Hepatitis C core Ag assay has emerged as a marker of HCV infection and an indirect marker of HCV replication . HCV core Ag is detected by several techniques including enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs), automated chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA) . The automated Abbott ARCHITECT HCV Ag assay (Wiesbaden, Germany) is a two‐step chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA) for the quantitative determination of HCV core antigen in serum and plasma .…”

“…Moreover, the HCV core antigen test can be utilized to detect the early phase of HCV infection prior to the development of antibodies, both in the blood bank setting and in the diagnostic laboratory (22). However, it is difficult to generate high-quality antibodies against core protein, although detection of HCV core present in serum is highly sensitive and specific (3).…”

“…A number of studies have demonstrated good correlation between HCVcAg and HCV RNA levels, particularly in HCV-monoinfected individuals [6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13]. As a result, HCVcAg testing is considered to be an alternative assay to conventional HCV RNA quantification with the advantages of rapidity, reproducibility and feasibility in settings with limited resources [14].…”
