The Potential of Small Dams for Conjunctive Water Management in Rural Municipalities

Abstract: The drinking water supply to Vila Pouca de Aguiar municipality in North Portugal is based on high quality groundwater, namely on nearly one hundred artesian springs and fifty boreholes. The groundwater resources are plentiful on a municipal level, but evidence some deficits at the sub-municipal (village) level, especially during the dry period (July- August) that coincides with the return of many emigrants for holiday time. The deficits affect mostly the municipal capital (Vila Pouca de Aguiar) and a neighbori… Show more

“…The second cluster (yellow) focuses on groundwater resources and includes concepts such as "groundwater abstractions", "groundwater resources", or "groundwater recharge". The growing concern for conserving groundwater resources has led to the construction of more IPs on agricultural farms, giving rise to the development of a line of research based on the study of the contribution of the IPs to the recharging of aquifers [33,69] and the management and joint use of different water sources to guarantee the sustainability of groundwater without affecting the agricultural yields [70][71][72][73].…”

“…It is quite important to tackle this issue since this study proved that the interactions with water quality are statistically significant. The utility of such approaches also to provides information about which can be the better locations for water caption [55], or in terms of land use planning, how should be implemented. Although it was assumed that the long scale effects are dominant, this study design also proved that is extremely important to explore different spatial extents since in a single spatial the strongest impact might now be accessed.…”

“…The surface water component could however be used to complement the public water supply, if stored in small dams in the forested areas of the catchment headwaters [91]. The use of small dams minimizes negative consequences upon aquatic ecosystems, such as habitat fragmentation [92].…”
